Leacklee and Stockinish, like the other settlements in the Bays of Harris, are crofting and fishing communities. In the past each croft housed many families and times were hard. Remnants of lazy beds or strip cultivation can still be seen around the croft where families grew crops in the rocky landscape.

Crowlin & 4b LeackleeHarris is wonderful for exploring, and offers endless opportunities for both the brave-hearted and the less ambitious adventurer. The BBC programme Castaway was filmed on the Island of Taransay off the west coast.


No.2 Tee - Harris Golf ClubThe area to the north of Tarbert is mountainous and hill walkers will enjoy climbing the "Clisham", Harris' highest hill. The east coast is rocky, and the Atlantic coast is famous for its beaches and machair land. There is a spectacular 9-hole golf course at Scarista. Do try to avoid driving off into the Atlantic from number 2 tee! You will find a set of golf clubs and trolley in the house for your use.

Harris to North Uist Ferry, LeverburghThe single-track road passing in front of the house winds its way around the Bays of Harris, It is known as "The Golden Road" as it cost so much to build in the 1930's. Previously used tracks are still visible and the top path passes the old mission house and leads to the neighbouring village, Geocrab. School pupils would trek this path to go to school.

Leacklee, Ardvey & LickistoStockinish Post Office is half a mile away, and Stockinish pier, a mile away, makes for a lovely stroll in an evening. There is a slipway that visitors who wish to take dinghies could use. The lochs in the bays on calm days are ideal for canoeing and there is good fishing to be had at the mouth of Loch Stockinish.

The nearest shops are located in Tarbert, the main village in Harris. One of the 2 food shops is also a newsagent. Other amenities include GP and dental surgeries, churches, library, post office, a garage and petrol station. Both the hotel and motel serve excellent food. A new sports centre with swimming pool, and gymnasium has recently been opened. Mobile shops pass by the house most days, and snacks and light meals are served in the café of the new local community centre in Leacklee.
