Leacklee
and Stockinish, like the other settlements in the Bays of Harris,
are crofting and fishing communities. In the past each croft housed
many families and times were hard. Remnants of lazy beds or strip
cultivation can still be seen around the croft where families
grew crops in the rocky landscape.
Harris
is wonderful for exploring, and offers endless opportunities for
both the brave-hearted and the less ambitious adventurer. The
BBC programme Castaway was filmed on the Island of Taransay off
the west coast.
The
area to the north of Tarbert is mountainous and hill walkers will
enjoy climbing the "Clisham", Harris' highest hill.
The east coast is rocky, and the Atlantic coast is famous for
its beaches and machair land. There is a spectacular 9-hole golf
course at Scarista. Do try to avoid driving off into the Atlantic
from number 2 tee! You will find a set of golf clubs and trolley
in the house for your use.
The
single-track road passing in front of the house winds its way
around the Bays of Harris, It is known as "The Golden Road"
as it cost so much to build in the 1930's. Previously used tracks
are still visible and the top path passes the old mission house
and leads to the neighbouring village, Geocrab. School pupils
would trek this path to go to school.
Stockinish
Post Office is half a mile away, and Stockinish pier, a mile away,
makes for a lovely stroll in an evening. There is a slipway that
visitors who wish to take dinghies could use. The lochs in the
bays on calm days are ideal for canoeing and there is good fishing
to be had at the mouth of Loch Stockinish.
The
nearest shops are located in Tarbert, the main village in Harris.
One of the 2 food shops is also a newsagent. Other amenities include
GP and dental surgeries, churches, library, post office, a garage
and petrol station. Both the hotel and motel serve excellent food.
A new sports centre with swimming pool, and gymnasium has recently
been opened. Mobile shops pass by the house most days, and snacks
and light meals are served in the café of the new local
community centre in Leacklee.
